2/2/2024 0 Comments Review of writefull![]() ![]() Writefull is just scratching the surface of the potential for AI-based writing tools. According to the Writefull team, their AI-based service can lead to lower immediate rejection rates, higher acceptance rates, quicker acceptance and fewer revision rounds for authors submitting a text to be published in a journal.Īfter the presentation, several of us had lunch with Juan and Hilde, where we continued to discuss the topic of AI and its increasingly prominent role in editing and translation. For example, Writefull is currently used by publishers as a tool to streamline ‒ and perhaps reduce the need for ‒ human editing, thereby leading to lower overall overhead costs and opening a path to publication for many scholars with lower levels of English, such as Chinese-language authors. The presenters noted that AI-based editing tools have uses in different tiers within the industry. We discussed how AI-based language editing may impact the individuality of writing styles. Not all editing tools are alike, of course, as PerfectIt, Grammarly, Trinka and others show, and some are more effective than others. Writefull began as a tool for students and researchers as a means of overcoming language barriers, and it is now used by several editing companies and publishers.ĭuring the presentation, AI was discussed in terms of its merits, but it was also dissected and challenged. Writefull uses natural language processing (NLP) to identify aberrations in typical English sentence constructions (length, word order, word choice, formal/informal, language accuracy and language use). According to Juan and Hilde, the software uses language models constructed using hundreds of millions of sentences derived from open-access papers, mainly in the field of bioscience, in order to provide solutions to speed up language-related tasks. Writefull’s team consists of seven people based in the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Spain. ![]() Their presentation focused on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to revise academic texts, as well as what Writefull can offer SENSE members as an AI-based editing tool. Don’t worry - this is so you can focus on the relevant parts in your document: those sentences that may need to be backed up by a reference. At the 11 November 2022 UniSIG meeting, 12 SENSE members met at Park Plaza Hotel in Utrecht to hear about Writefull from Dr Juan Castro (CEO of Writefull) and Dr Hilde van Zeeland (Chief Applied Linguist). You might see placeholders instead, like and. The following parts of your document may be omitted from your text in Writefull Cite: How your document is shown in Writefull Cite This allows you to adjust the ‘missing citation’ suggestions shown in your text, depending on how sensitive you want the confidence models to be (or how sure you want to be that you are not missing any citation). TIP: You can play with the confidence threshold at the very top of the page (next to Compact View). This is very useful information as this tells you where you should seriously consider adding a citation, and where it might perhaps be less critical for you to do so. The numbers are ranging from 0.50 to 1.00 - the closer to 1, the more confident Writefull is. In the example above, Writefull is 80% confident that a reference should be included at the end of the sentence 'In general, it is believed that probiotics help keep up the balance between harmful and beneficial bacteria in the gut thus maintaining a healthy digestive system'. ![]() Put simply, what they show you is how confident Writefull is that the sentence should be backed up by a reference. The decimal numbers given in the yellow arrows show the confidence levels of the models. The sentences that do need your attention are pointed to by a yellow arrow at the end, as shown in the example below: Interpreting 'missing citation' suggestions TIP: If you turn on the compact view at the very top of the page, you will see only those paragraphs where citations are missing, so you can go through all the suggestions in your document more quickly. Sentences/paragraphs that don't need your attention will be greyed out. A count of 12 missing citations means that 12 sentences were identified by Writefull as likely to need a citation. At the top of the page, you can see the number of missing citations that Writefull has detected throughout the document. tex.Īfter uploading your document to Writefull Cite, you can see your text with missing citation suggestions from Writefull. You can upload any document to Writefull Cite to see which sentences within it are missing citations, only the following formats are accepted .docx.
